Two young gentlemen, Jack and Algy, both adopt the name of Ernest for their alter egos, allowing them to fulfil their exciting social commitments in both town and country. As luck would have it, their respective romantic interests Gwendolen and Cecily are both taken with this particular name and the sound of wedding bells is not too far away…

Things go awry when the men end up together in the country and their deception is uncovered, putting their nuptial hopes in jeopardy. A hilarious series of mistaken identities ensues, during which all concerned learn the vital importance of being earnest.
