Musical Theatre Course
Grow your acting, singing and movement skills, in our new weekly musical theatre course, led by the team at Midlands Academy of Musical Theatre. Learn a variety of techniques across three disciplines, experiment with script and voice work and gain the feedback you need to elevate your musical theatre performances in a relaxed, fun and welcoming environment which is open to all.
The course builds towards you filming you performing on stage at The Blue Orange Theatre. This showcase in the summer term is the perfect opportunity to invite friends, family and other guests to see the work you’ve been doing.
Class time: Tuesday evenings 6.30pm – 8pm
Term 1 – Tuesday 6th October – Tuesday 15th December 2020 (10 weeks, no session 27th October).
This is a three-term course, newcomers are very welcome to join at the start of any term.
Cost: £200 per term – 10 Sessions. Early Bird tickets (£160) are available until 2nd October and places are strictly limited.
The course will be led by our expert facilitators who have a vast amount of professional experience within the industry and are faculty member of Midlands Academy of Musical Theatre. They will support you in your learning experience in order to develop your skills in a way that best suits you, whatever your strengths and weaknesses are!
If you haven’t been on stage since school or have always held a secret dramatic desire, this course is the perfect place for you to give Musical Theatre a whirl. You may also be an experienced performer already, looking to refresh your skills and experience new approaches; the course is tailored to the specific group and our tutors are experts in delivering a course to meet your own personal goals.
Topics covered generally include:
- Vocal techniques which get the best out of your singing voice.
- Optional solo opportunities for those seeking 1:1 feedback.
- Movement skills with fun choreography for different abilities.
- Exploring acting through song, using the lyrics to present a truthful character.
- Freeing emotion and finding connection with other actors.
- Exploring the use of the voice and body in performance.
- Finding the playfulness, fun and spontaneity in performing.
- Building confidence for performance.
- Rehearsing scenes from plays, TV and film scripts.
- Being truthful in imaginary circumstances.
You will receive constructive feedback throughout with weekly chances to perform. Guest tutors from many areas of the industry will also join from time to time.

Musical Theatre Coach – James Williams
James is an international acting and voice coach with extensive experience of helping actors at all stages of their career to develop their craft and grow as performers in a relaxed and supportive environment. Originally from London, where he still runs a successful Covent Garden agency, James’ directing credits include work with the National Theatre, Wales Millennium Centre, Oxford Playhouse and numerous others.
Last year, James was appointed as Artistic Director of JW Theatres who now operate The Blue Orange and is the director of many in-house productions. James has been coaching for over 12 years and his experience includes panto, plays, musical theatre, film, TV, new writing, Shakespeare and more.
