The Winter’s Tale Revisited (28th July)

The Willmore Singers presents ‘The Winter’s Tale Revisited’

Part of Birmingham Fest 2019

This one hour adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale focuses exclusively on jealousy as a stark background for acts of domestic violence.

Set in 2019 in the world of organised crime, where Leontes dominates through fear and entitlement, his associates are unable to resist or challenge him as he asserts his authority with fatal consequences. The Winters Tale unfolds as a story of undeserved redemption where reunion and forgiveness leave a bad taste in our mouths, it is an unashamed critique of our society which props up violent relationships with hugely unstable power dynamics, and explores how this plays out amongst the privileged class, challenging the prevailing preconception of the ruling elites that dysfunction is the sole remit of the poor.

Explore our own culture of gendered violence and domestic oppression with Shakespeare’s words and new music. Content warning for abuse and violence.
